WXXI Radio discusses the new CBS show "United States of Al." Joining Evan are KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith; Veterans for American Ideals Chris Purdy; SIVs Jamil Haidari and Samim Rahimi. The new CBS sitcom called "The United States of Al" tells the story of an Afghan interpreter who is reunited with a Marine veteran in the U.S. after escaping the Taliban. It's a familiar story – and an often long and painful process – for interpreters who come to America on Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs) after serving with the U.S. military. Even before it aired, the show's premise was under fire.

On this Veterans Day, we hear the remarkable stories and sacrifices of three Afghan natives who served alongside US troops in Afghanistan as interpreters. Thank you to all who participated in our Zoom Community Discussion on the Emmy nominated documentary, The Interpreters, directed by Andrès Caballero and Sofian Khan.
A special thank you to Hanif, who just arrived here in Rochester, for sharing the harrowing story of his 5 year journey to resettle in the United States, as well as Mujtaba for giving us an update on how his life has been since the end of the filming of this documentary which highlights his arrival in Rochester. We are so grateful that they have chosen to make Rochester their home!
